Strategy for Playing In Freeroll PokerStar Tournaments

Most poker rooms offer freeroll tournaments which are tournaments where you don’t need to pay anything in order to sign-up. Typically freeroll tournaments are going to have plenty of players taking part so you will need to able to meet the time commitment that these types of tournaments will take to finish.

In the early stages of a freeroll tournament you’re going to find that a lot of the players are going to be going all-in because they want to increase their chip stack right away. It’s ideal to sit back in this situation early on and wait for a couple good hands where you can double up. If you manage to double up a couple times you’ll be sitting with a nice amount of chips, but you can’t stop now. If you make it to the middle of the tournament and the blinds are now big you need to see where you’re at in the tournament. If you’re sitting in the top 10% of the players then I would suggest sitting back and just playing your monster hands. You should be able to increase your stack a bit, but the important thing is you won’t be risking your chips very often. If you are not in the top 10% of the players then you have some work to do and you need to play in more hands so that you can try and hit some hands.

One thing you can’t do in large tournaments though is just sit back and relax without playing any hands because eventually the blinds will catch up with you. You don’t want to need to worry about this happening so you should always make sure you’re playing some hands and winning some chips. As you get closer to the PokerStar.com money positions you should begin slowing down how many hands you’re playing so that you don’t make a mistake and lose your chips before you’re in the money. Typically not very positions are going to get paid in freeroll tournaments so you will need to make it deep so if you have made it this far then you need to do your best to hang on until you reach the money.

A lot of players find that the time it takes to play a freeroll tournament isn’t worth the money you win, but you need to remember there is no risk in playing these. If you want to make more money then you should be playing with real money in real tournaments. Freeroll tournaments are great for the new poker player who is looking to improve their game and gain some table experience.
